American Legion Poppy (Papaver rhoeas) Grows 1 to 2 feet tall, bright red flowers, reseeds. Summer annual. Likes full sun, low to moderate water. Recommended for roadsides, fields, meadows, mixtures. Use 1 pound per acre. 1/4 pound seeds per 11,000 square feet.

For years I’ve bought and planted the poppies just to have flocks of tiny birds to devour them. This year my husband built me a large planter with framed bird netting using a horse trough. The curious tiny birds land on the structure but can’t get in. Can’t wait to see my field of poppies this year!
