Product Description
McPhail trap used extensively for both monitoring and mass trapping of Olive Fruit Fly. A plastic two part trap. The upper clear part and a bottom yellow cup part. The bottom cup part is filled with a yeast in water solution. Place 3-4 Torula Yeast Lure tablets (see item number below) in bottom of trap and fill with water. The Olive Fruit Fly is attracted to the yeast solution, enters thru a hole in the bottom part of the trap. Once in the trap the fly can not figure out how to get back out, gets tired and falls into the water. In warm weather replace the water as it evaporates. Replace the solution monthly.

Pros: Price point, ease of use, it works.
Cons: Crumbled to pieces in 6 months, starting with the hanging tabs.

We already have two traps and just ordered two more. Our olive tree has grown. Works great with the yeast tablets, and caught lots of flies, all sizes.

My previous review was 5 stars. I've reduced to 2 stars because you'll be lucky to get two seasons of use before the hanger tabs break off, and you can't fill thru the top -- you must remove the trap from the tree and separate the top half from the bottom half in order to add water -- very time-consuming, and the process subjects the hanger tabs to more strain. I prefer my glass beehive fly traps.

Improved fixation

I have been using the McPhail traps initially for monitoring and lately as a mass trapping device. The old version, as depicted above features a rope/string to hang it into a tree, which is not always easy to do and also makes rebaiting more difficult. The new wire hanging method is a vast improvement, which makes the removal and hanging of the trap easier and quicker. With respect to the efficiency I can only say that we've trapped oodles of flies, but it is not a complete control. I only hope that continued used and rebaiting will have a long term effect on the size of the infestation.

Besides torula yeast, a little bacon and a little Spinosad in your trap will knock down a lot of insect pests
